How active are you on Linkedin? If not then you are not alone. A recent article showed that there are now nearly 400 million users of Linkedin but only 25 percent are regularly active.
There are understandable reasons why people are not active. However there are also good motives on why you should be active and have a working presence on the site.
Reasons For Inactivity
Linkedin has been a major resource for looking for a job. It is a go to site that recruiters use to find candidates. It is the place to connect with the right people and get background information on potential employers. But once the individual has the job, they may think there is no longer a reason to be on the site.
Linkedin is focused on business and is accessible 24 hours a day. Many people who have a 9-5 job may not want to take their business home with them. They would rather chill out watching puppy videos on Facebook or Tweet about the latest contestants on The Voice. The last thing some people want to see in the evening is a discussion on the proper way to market your business.
You Are Not Tim Ferris
One of the tricks with developing your Linkedin Profile is to look at others and see what stands out and use it on your own profile. A while back I was listening to an interview with Tim Ferris. I thought it would be interesting to check out his profile.
In his summary he stated that you can connect with him but it may be a while before he gets to this because he only checks in Linkedin once a month. Of course, Tim Ferris has been instrumental in introducing the concept of lifestyle design with work.
He is the author of the bestselling book the Four Hour workweek as well as the four hour chef and Four Hour Body. He has established a brand and platform based on the Four Hour concept with a blog of the same name and his own podcast.
He did not need Linkedin to establish himself and used other avenues for his success. But you and I are not Tim Ferriss.
You Are Not Conan O’Brien
Two years ago Conan Obrien created a profile on Linkedin. It was developed as a plan to become the number one Influencer on Linkedin. It was a chance to as he stated “complete the Conan obrien social media empire and waste America’s time once again”
Aspects of his profile went against the grain of professional and meaningful content that appears on Linkedin. Examples of his profilein his experience:
The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien
June 2009 – February 2010 (9 months)
Reference to his controversial depature as host of the tonight show.
March 1981 – May 1993 (12 years 3 months
Good to have something to fall back on if the television host thing does not work out….
Build Wealth the Trump Way (Online)
Build Wealth by Suing Donald Trump Over Failure to Build Wealth (Online)
Of course he can do this because he is Conan Obrien, a household name in comedy and entertainment. He is now a Linkedin Influencer but has been a late night national television host for over twenty years. He did not need Linkedin to become established.
But you and I are not Conan Obrien.
Reasons To Be Active
Unemployment is now down to 5 percent, a far cry from the double digit figures from 4 or 5 years ago. The job market is now tighter. The Unemployment rate down it becomes a job seekers market. Qualified candidates have the upper hand. Good people are hard to find.
You have the opportunity to take ownership of your career. Linkedin helps you do this. It has long been known as the site for helping to get a job. It is also the site that can help establish your brand
Linkedin can also help with your business. Tim Ferris helped but lifestyle design on the map. Conan Obrien found it as the missing piece of his social media empire. Linkedin has a place in anyone’s overall social media strategy.
